Introduction

This blog will argue the negative impacts of modern communication on society and how they outweigh the positive aspects. There are many negative impacts on society but the main three will be discussed here. The first argument is that modern communication technologies such as cell phones can have negative effects of the human body and mind.

The second argument is that the English language has rapidly declined since the creation of the new communication technologies. The third argument is that the modern communication has become extremely easy to use and extremely fast which has made these new means of communication addictive. Lastly, the final argument is that modern communications positives are too good to ignore because of the amount of positives compared to the negative impacts.

Health Effects

Cell phones are becoming one of the most widely used devices for modern communication because of their portability, availability and convenience. Cell phones are an amazing technology which allows us to communicate with each other with the press of the button anywhere in the world at any time but they have a lot of unknown side effects on human health.

According to Dowell, D (2011) cell phones have many different negative effects on the human body like the possibility of getting brain cancer from the low frequency radiation that cell phones emit, addiction to the use of cell phones, sleep loss and increased strain and exhaustion, which shows that cell phones are a possible risk to our health and like many other forms of communication should be used in moderation.

Language Skills

Modern Communication technologies have integrated themselves into everyday life because of the way people communicate has changed drastically in the recent years. Instead of calling people to talk with our voices, modern communication has changed the way we talk by typing our messages into these new technologies. These new technologies are not helping our language skills according to Jury, P (2010) who says that “In the end, the best way to think of text messaging is not as a degradation of English, and certainly not as an improvement of it, but rather as a separate language entirely” which he calls “textese” which shows that these new forms of technology are teaching children a new language and some children are not capable to switch between formal English and “textese”.

Modern Communication Addiction

Many of the new forms of communication are used almost every day, so much so that it is common to see people using their modern communication technologies in any situation which has been integrated into everyday life, but it is an addiction. The technology that exists now that lets people communicate is quick, easy and portable but because of that people are using in situations that they shouldn’t be used because people are unable to continue their day without letting their friends know what they are doing every second of the day.  According to Eisner, A (2010) “56% of social media users need to check Facebook at least once a day” which shows that 56% users of this form of modern communication are addicted to using this form of communication and use it frequently.

Social Networking

Although modern communication has many negative impacts on society there are still upsides to using these new ways to communicate. Social networking is an amazing tool that allows people to communicate with multiple people, meet new friends, socialize and join groups from any smart phone or computer.

According to Jansson, Y (2011) “There are millions of frequent visits, sometimes daily from people who want to meet you and hear your thoughts”. But Sweeny, R (2011) says that social networks can increase cyber bullying, weaken friendships, increase insecurities and overall have a negative effect on people which means that even though people can make new friends on social networks there is high chance that the person who wants to befriend others has ulterior motives.
